 Long ago , people living in forests used stones for money out of salt . finally , people started using silver and gold for money . Metal ( silver , gold etc ) was not easily damaged by water, heat , or time . Everyone wanted it because there was not very much of it . Metal money was made in different forms. Metal money was better than salt or stone money. But if there were many of it , metal money would be hard to carry. It was heavy and took up a lot of space. That is why today there is also paper money with numbers written on it to indicate how much the money has value
